Entry requirements

L1: French and EU high school students, as well as students who wish to change subjects after one year of university-level education, need to apply to the course via the Post Bac Admission Procedure: Parcoursup Students from outside the EU: need to follow the application procedure for foreign students.

L2: L1 students who have been accepted into L2 need to apply via the eCandidate and/or Campus France websites.

Benefits of the program

The first year of the course (L1) covers all three disciplines. In the first semester, the three units all cover a common theme. These interdisciplinary units are designed to help students develop sought-after professional skills.

In L2, students can either choose to continue one of the three subjects, or keep two and study towards a double Licence degree. Students will then progressively specialise for a major/minor degree, which will prepare them for various L3 courses, the job market, or further research.

Acquired skills

A Licence degree in Sociology will help you to gain valuable skills in many different fields of study. Throughout the degree, you will develop your analytical, critical, written and oral expression skills. The knowledge that you acquire during the degree is combined with practical and in-depth assignments; data analysis, digital research, statistical tools, summary communication and an introduction to a professional project such as enquiries, public and private actors, teaching, or a work placement.

International

Students can take advantage of existing Erasmus agreements, or suggest new ones (for example: Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg, the University of Granada, University of Bologna, the University of Aveiro, the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, the University of Bucharest, the National Technical University of Athens and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague.

Bilateral agreements make more distant mobility possible at partner universities (for example: Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, Costa Rica, United States, Canada, China, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc.).

Your future career

The general nature of this course means that students can go into several careers related to sociology, whether in a company or an association, such as human resources, organisation, communication and social networks, or digital sociology. As well as this, the course prepares students for any career that requires skills from the social science sector.

If students obtain a Master’s degree after graduating, they can apply for careers in: Market research or policy making for jobs in communication, surveys, or local politics ; the civil service in a local public authority; research, or teaching.

Professional integration

The university is a founding member of PEPITE 3EF. The purpose of this scheme is to promote entrepreneurship among students and enable those with an entrepreneurial project to reconcile their project and their studies. Université Gustave Eiffel has an entrepreneurship adviser, whose mission is to meet students, support them and offer them the many services we provide: project maturation workshops, entrepreneurial speed dating, D2E (entrepreneurship setup degree), advice from professional partners, etc.

Study objectives

In the first year, students will be taught subject-specific and methodological courses for the three main disciplines. The teaching team regularly discuss and review the curriculum; in the first semester, the three subject units focus on the same theme which is chosen collectively by the teachers and focuses on the body and health. These units offer an introduction to the three human sciences and the core modules allow students to see how specific skills and knowledge they have learned in one of the modules can be applied to any of the other disciplines. As well as these units, other units give students the opportunity to learn about different fields of study such as ethnology, non-European history and non-European geography.

In L1, the course encourages students to think about the methodology of university work. This allows them to develop interdisciplinary skills which can be used in almost any professional setting (researching information, reading and understanding a document, writing a demonstrative text, presenting an oral argument, etc.).

At the end of the first year, students then have the choice to continue in one of the disciplines or keep two and study for a double Licence degree. If a student decides to keep studying two subjects, in second year they will have a specially adapted timetable so they can continue the course. These students will also have a reduced workload, as they will have to take more compulsory modules in order to obtain a Licence degree in both subjects.

Calendar

Teaching is made up of 12-week semesters. There will be 2 exams and 1 resit each year. You will have the opportunity to do a work placement in semester 4.

Options

Module choices are only available in L2. However, you can choose to study a modern foreign language (German, Spanish, or a language offered by CAPLA) or Latin as an additional extra-credit module.
