Entry requirements

1st Year or similar level of a graduate course in Mathematics.

Benefits of the program

The degree in Mathematics is designed to provide students with the theoretical foundations and basic knowledge in the field together with a strong grounding in Computer Science. Because of its specific nature (teaching in two fields from the first year), it is an original course offering compared to traditional preparatory classes or general science degrees, for example. By the end of undergraduate studies, it gives students a very high level of knowledge and skills in mathematics and computer science.

Acquired skills

Autonomy of reasoning, theoretical foundations necessary for abstract thought, command of fundamental concepts in analysis, algebra, probability and statistics, and geometry. Understanding and analysing a problem connected with mathematics, discussing the findings and setting up a model for a problem.

Your future career

The Licence in Mathematics mainly leads to a Master’s in Mathematics, either in Pure or Applied Mathematics, or in Actuarial Science. The major engineering schools also recruit students at the end of their 3-year degree, on the basis of results and competitive examination. At Université Gustave Eiffel, we offer further study in the Mathematics and Applications Master's programme, the Careers in Teaching, Education and Training Master’s programme for those intending to go into teaching, and the Actuarial Science Master's programme.

GROUPES ET ARITHMETIQUE

This course focuses on the arithmetic of integers from an algebraic point of view. 1) integers: fundamental properties of the set of integers, Euclidean division, prime numbers, existence of decomposition into prime factors. 2) notion of group with particular attention paid to the study of the group (Z,+) 3) notions of gcd and ppcm and the results relating to them (Bezout's theorem, Euclid's lemma, Gauss' lemma, uniqueness of the decomposition into prime factors) 4) congruences (linear Diophantine equations, Chinese remainder theorem, Fermat's "small" theorem) 5) general theory of finite groups using the fundamental examples (Z/nZ, +) and ((Z/nZ)^*, x) 6) Finally, the sixth chapter defines the notion of group morphism and allows us to clarify and enrich the results of chapter 4 with a new perspective."

LABO MATHS-INFO

The objective of the course is to learn how to represent and manipulate basic mathematical objects by computer, to perform algebraic and numerical calculations using the computer tool, to explore mathematical problems using the computer tool, to model and solve practical problems using mathematics and computer science. The course is organized around a series of varied problems (Mandelbrot set, cryptography, splines, calculation of usual functions, etc.) comprising a theoretical part and a practical part (programming). The mathematical concepts involved in these problems are the basic concepts seen in the first year: arithmetic, binary relations, complex numbers, sequences and functions, polynomials, linear algebra, matrices, etc. The programming part is done in Python.

ANGLAIS
ANGLAIS 3

The teaching of English during the bachelor's degree aims to improve written and oral skills so that students become more autonomous. The aim is to be able to understand and communicate in future professional exchanges, as well as to be able to understand the scientific articles that they may encounter during their studies and/or professional lives. Throughout the bachelor's degree, English courses focus on providing an opening to different cultures in order to encourage exchanges between countries. Level groups are set up during the first semester to enable everyone to approach English courses in the best possible conditions. The emphasis is on oral participation thanks to a quality policy of the UFR which organises English courses in half groups.
