Benefits of the program

After a multi-disciplinary first year (geography, history, sociology) and gradual specialisation from the second year, the L3 Digital Culture and Society pathway provides general training in human geography and sound in-depth studies in digital culture and society. The training is delivered by experts in different cultural areas in urban, rural and social geography and experts in digital humanities.

Acquired skills

The L3 Geography Digital culture and society pathway equips students with both general knowledge in the subject area as well as skills which are valued in a large number of industry sectors. Students develop their analytical and critical skills as regards documents and discussions, in particular digital. Emphasis is placed on developing their written and verbal communication skills and on using digital tools effectively. Graduates of this training program are proficient in a wide range of expertise: - knowledge of spaces at all levels, from the local (urban) to the global (North-South relations, environmental and economic issues); - concrete and rigorous methods in individual work (documentary research and field surveys); - an introduction to career plans (urban planning and development, knowledge of institutions, awareness of stakeholder conflicts); - knowledge of the social issues of geography and land use planning policies; - expertise in terms of data analysis and summary communication (mapping, statistics, field placements).

Your future career

Students on this pathway go on to do the Master's in Culture and Web Careers or the Master's in Change Management, Competency and Organisation (MACOR). It is also possible to choose another Master's such as those offered at the UPEM: the Master's in Urban Planning and Development at the Paris School of Urban Planning, the Master's in Spaces, Societies and Territories (jointly accredited with the UPEC) or Territorial Cultural Development.

Professional integration

The university is a founding member of the PEPITE 3EF. The aim of this scheme is to promote entrepreneurship in students and enable those who have an entrepreneurial project to balance their project and their studies. The UPEM has an entrepreneurship advisor assigned to meet students, support them and offer them a variety of services which we provide, including project maturation workshops, entrepreneurial speed dating, D2E (institution's entrepreneurship diploma) and advice from professional partners.

Study objectives

The Licence 3 Geography-Planning Digital Culture and Society Pathway is designed to be a consolidating year in geography and an introduction to digital humanities approaches.

It offers a rich array of courses and has four objectives: transferring general geographical knowledge, providing training in digital humanities, providing training in the use of tools and opening out to "off-centre" items and topics so that geography and planning is represented in all its diversity.

The courses also feature a wide variety of teaching forms, with tutorials making up a large part and significant weighting given to learning "in project mode", particularly in Semester 2. Workshops are therefore an active teaching tool where students have to organise and conduct a group field study within the timeframe of one semester. The work placement is optional and also provides an opportunity to gain experience in the workplace.
