Benefits of the program

After a multi-disciplinary first year (geography, history, sociology) and gradual specialisation from the second year, the L3 Geography Education pathway provides general training in human geography and skill sets to prepare students fully for a career in teaching. Students planning to take the primary teacher recruitment examination (CRPE) are offered a pre-professional training course and teaching methodology courses in history and geography as well as courses in mathematics and French. Students planning to take the CAPES (secondary school teaching certificate) are offered a pre-professional training course and courses in historiography, epistemology and history of education, as well as training for the oral part of the competitive examination.

Acquired skills

The Geography and Planning Licence equips students with both general knowledge in the subject area as well as skills which are valued in a large number of industry sectors. Students develop their analytical and critical skills as regards documents and discussions. Emphasis is placed on developing their written and verbal communication skills and on using tools effectively. Graduates of this training programme are proficient in a wide range of expertise:

- knowledge of spaces at all levels, from the local (urban) to the global (North-South relations, environmental and economic issues);

- concrete and rigorous methods in individual work (documentary research and field surveys);

- an introduction to career plans (urban planning and development, knowledge of institutions, awareness of stakeholder conflicts);

- knowledge of the social issues of geography and land use planning policies;

- expertise in terms of data analysis and summary communication (mapping, statistics, field placements).

Your future career

Students on this pathway go on to do the Master's in Careers in Teaching, Education and Training for primary or secondary schools in order to prepare for the competitive examination for primary, middle school or secondary school teachers. It is also possible to choose another Master's degree, such as those offered at Université Gustave Eiffel: Spaces, Societies and Territories (jointly accredited with the UPEC), Urban Planning and Development (EUP), Territorial Cultural Development or Culture and Web Careers.

Professional integration

The university is a founding member of PEPITE 3EF. The purpose of this scheme is to promote entrepreneurship among students and enable those with an entrepreneurial project to reconcile their project and their studies. Université Gustave Eiffel has an entrepreneurship adviser, whose mission is to meet students, support them and offer them the many services we provide: project maturation workshops, entrepreneurial speed dating, D2E (entrepreneurship setup degree), advice from professional partners, etc.

Study objectives

The Education pathway in the Geography and Planning Licence is for students who wish to prepare for the teaching competitive examinations. This pathway leads to a specialisation in the third year, which prepares students for the Master’s in Careers in Teaching, Education and Training.

Alongside a core curriculum of general courses in geography and planning, students are offered a choice of options which prepare them from the third year of the Licence and meet the requirements of the teaching competitive examinations. In the first semester, they take history courses and have to choose options related to their pre-professional training. In the second semester, they take courses in geography, history and sociology of education (directly linked to their future professional environment) and options such as a course in epistemology and history of education, or even a training module for the oral tests in history and geography (mock oral examinations). During the epistemology and history of education course, there is an observation placement in a school (which lasts two weeks), prepared as part of the course, supervised by a teacher at the school and resulting in a report assessed by a placement tutor who is one of the Licence lecturers.

This is a pathway common to the History Licence and the Sociology Licence (for the CRPE).

The courses that prepare students for teaching careers are highly regarded by students, as is the observation placement experience in a school, which makes their career plan more tangible and, if necessary, gives them a chance to change direction before starting a Master's degree.
