Benefits of the program

After a first multidisciplinary year (geography, history, sociology) and progressive specialisation, the third year programme, Digital Societies and Cultures, offers general training in sociology and in-depth studies in digital societies and cultures. The training is provided by specialists in sociology and digital humanities.

Acquired skills

In addition to general knowledge in the discipline, the third year course in Sociology - Societies and Digital Cultures allows students to acquire valuable skills in many sectors of activity. Students are encouraged to develop their skills in analysing and critiquing documents and holding debates, particularly on digital issues. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in written and oral expression and mastering digital tools. Graduates of this training programme are proficient in a wide range of expertise: - a body of knowledge on spaces of all sizes, from local (urban) to global (North-South relations, environmental and economic issues); - concrete and rigorous methods in personal work (documentary research in digital humanities and field research); - an introduction to the professional project (planning and urban development, knowledge of institutions, taking into account stakeholder conflicts); - a body of knowledge on the social issues of geography and spatial planning policies; - know-how in terms of data analysis and communication of summaries (statistics, field experience, etc.).

Your future career

Students taking this course are oriented towards the Master’s degree in Web Culture and Professions, Corporate Communication and Social Media, Data Science and Digital Society. It is also possible to choose another Master's degree such as those offered at Université Gustave Eiffel: Master's degree in Urban Planning and Development from the École d'Urbanisme de Paris, Master's degree in Spaces, Societies, Territories (co-accredited with the UPEC) or Territorial Cultural Development.

Professional integration

The university is a founding member of PEPITE 3EF. The purpose of this scheme is to promote entrepreneurship among students and enable those with an entrepreneurial project to reconcile their project and their studies. Université Gustave Eiffel has an entrepreneurship adviser, whose mission is to meet students, support them and offer them the many services we provide: project maturation workshops, entrepreneurial speed dating, D2E (entrepreneurship setup degree), advice from professional partners, etc.

Study objectives

The Third-year Digital Societies and Cultures Licence degree in Sociology is designed as a year of consolidation in sociology and an initiation to approaches in digital humanities.

 

It offers a rich range of classes, pursuing several objectives: transmitting general knowledge in sociology; training in digital humanities; and training in digital tools.

 

The course also offers a diverse range of learning styles, with a significant amount of tutorials and a focus on learning in “project mode”, especially in the 2nd semester. Thus, the workshop is a tool for active learning, where students are required to organise and conduct a group field study within the allotted time of one semester. The work placement, which is optional, is also an opportunity for a professional initiation in a real situation.
