Benefits of the program

After a first multidisciplinary year (geography, history, sociology) and progressive specialisation from the 2nd year, the L3 Digital Societies and Cultures pathway offers general training in human geography and in-depth studies in digital societies and cultures. The training is delivered by experts in different cultural areas in urban, rural and social geography and experts in digital humanities.

Acquired skills

In addition to general knowledge in the discipline, the third year pathway in Geography -

Digital Societies and Cultures allows students to acquire valuable skills in many sectors of activity. Students are encouraged to develop their skills in analysing and critiquing documents and holding debates, particularly on digital issues. Emphasis is placed on developing skills in written and oral expression and mastering digital tools. Graduates of this training programme are proficient in a wide range of expertise: - knowledge of spaces at all levels, from the local (urban) to the global (North-South relations, environmental and economic issues);

- concrete and rigorous methods in individual work (documentary research into digital humanities and field surveys);

- an introduction to career plans (urban planning and development, knowledge of institutions, awareness of stakeholder conflicts);

- knowledge of the social issues of geography and land use planning policies;

- expertise in terms of data analysis and summary communication (mapping, statistics, field placements).

Your future career

Students following this pathway generally pursue their studies with the Master’s in Cultures and Professions of the Web or in Change Management and Sociology of Human Resources. It is also possible to choose another Master's degree such as those offered at Gustave Eiffel: Master's degree in Urban Planning and Development from the École d'Urbanisme de Paris, Master's degree in Spaces, Societies, Territories (co-accredited with the UPEC) or Territorial Cultural Development.

Professional integration

The university is a founding member of PEPITE 3EF. The purpose of this scheme is to promote entrepreneurship among students and enable those with an entrepreneurial project to reconcile their project and their studies. Université Gustave Eiffel has an entrepreneurship adviser, whose mission is to meet students, support them and offer them the many services we provide: project maturation workshops, entrepreneurial speed dating, D2E (entrepreneurship setup degree), advice from professional partners, etc.

Study objectives

The third-year Geography and Planning Licence in Digital Societies and Cultures is designed as a year of consolidation in geography and an initiation to approaches in digital humanities.

It offers a rich array of courses and has four objectives: transferring general geography knowledge; providing training in digital humanities; providing training in the use of tools; opening out to “off-centre” items and topics so that geography and planning is represented in all its diversity.

The course also offers a diverse range of learning styles, with a significant amount of tutorials and a focus on learning in “project mode”, especially in the 2nd semester. Thus, the workshop is a tool for active learning, where students are required to organise and conduct a group field study within the allotted time of one semester. The work placement, which is optional, is also an opportunity for a professional initiation in a real situation.
