Entry requirements
This University Diploma is open to anyone with a high school diploma (or equivalent, preferably from the general track): students enrolled in a Licence/Master’s/PhD in any discipline, at Université Gustave Eiffel or another university, as well as employed or retired people. No prior knowledge of Latin is required. The only prerequisite is a good level of written and oral expression in French.

The University Diploma in Latin from UGE offers a comprehensive approach, combining language learning (in small groups for greater efficiency) with classes in literature and ancient history.
The course is open to remote learning, making it accessible for working students.

- acquisition and improvement of Latin language skills; understanding of the language system and its evolution towards French;
- knowledge of ancient literature and Greco-Roman civilisation and culture.

Proficiency in Latin is essential for students who wish to specialise in disciplines that use sources in Latin, such as ancient, medieval or modern history, philosophy, humanities, languages, sciences, and so on. It’s also a clear advantage for being admitted into certain Master’s or PhDs in these fields.
The University Diploma in Latin also provides preparation for secondary school teachers to sit the Complementary Certification in Ancient Languages and Cultures (Latin option), in order to teach ancient languages and cultures in middle or high school.
Study objectives
The course aims to develop students’ proficiency in the Latin linguistic system and knowledge of ancient civilisation and culture, which are required to acquire a general understanding of classical texts.

Latin language; ancient history; classical literature.
Calendar
The University Diploma is a two-year course. Each academic year is made up of two semesters of twelve weeks of class each, between September and June.
