Entry requirements

L1: the course is open to French, European (EU) and non-European high school graduates, as well as students who have completed their first year of higher education. L2 and L3: the course is open to French, European and non-European students.

Expected skills: good level of general knowledge, basic history of film, text and image analysis skills, argumentation skills, team player.

Benefits of the program

Our course is designed to provide students with solid general foundations, to enable them to find employment quickly in their preferred specialisation (audiovisual or cinema studies), using an approach in which practice, theory and history are not mutually exclusive but, on the contrary, are interconnected. The specialisation in cinema and audiovisual studies at Université Gustave Eiffel is the only course in this field in eastern Paris. It has been the subject of significant reflection over several four-year periods, resulting in a programme in which audiovisual theory and practice are studied not simply side by side, but in respect to the way they interact and connect with each other.

Acquired skills

Our course aims to provide an understanding of audiovisual works with regard to their practices, aesthetic and theoretical scope, and social functions. During the Licence degree, students will acquire basic knowledge of the history and theory of cinema, enabling them to develop a critical approach. The unique feature of this theory-based course is that it is supported by an introduction to practical aspects, which therefore inform the theoretical and aesthetic questions. And vice versa, the approach to practical aspects is based on solid grounding in the history, aesthetics and theory of cinema and audiovisual media, putting techniques from these fields into perspective.

Your future career

The Licence in Cinema and Audiovisual Studies is a three-year course. Graduates will receive a general education degree. Some students find employment opportunities following their end-of-study work placement (editing, production assistant or assistant director, work in cultural institutions). Others continue their studies with a Master’s degree (two years). Enrolling in this Licence is therefore a major investment of time and effort in this discipline. Students must carefully consider their career objectives, which may involve pursuing a Master’s degree. The course opens up job opportunities in film production and direction, research, reviewing, cultural development and programming, etc.
