Benefits of the program

Road safety is a major international issue (approximately 1.35 million deaths, 30 million wounded every year). In Africa, the challenge is even greater than on other continents. The human and economic losses are considerable, causing GDP to drop by several percentage points. Improving road safety is therefore not only a major public health issue, but also an economic one, with significant impact on development aid. The course responds to a need for training in French, focusing on road safety and structured around experts and researchers specialised in this field. The need has been clearly identified by African road safety stakeholders, as part of the SaferAfrica research project, in which Université Gustave Eiffel participated. It addresses skills under the five pillars of road safety defined by the WHO, which structure the Road Safety Charter created by the African Union: management, infrastructure, vehicles, users, and post-crash response. It gives participants an overall, structured and documented vision of road safety concepts, by studying them through the lens of specific and diverse issues from French-speaking African countries.

Acquired skills

The course aims to develop capabilities for action on road safety in countries where the students work, and networks of expertise and collaboration in French-speaking African countries.

The skills acquired will allow candidates to take appropriate organisational measures and make informed decisions, to help improve road safety and implement effective policy.
